Volunteer Spotlight
volunteer gives all to see others succeed
Gloria Moen has dedicated more than 20 years of her life as a volunteer for The Salvation Army Bremerton Corps. While that time and dedication is incredibly admirable, what is even more impressive is her endless supply of love and energy to serve others in need.
“I’m always happy when someone else is happy. We’re trying to help the most people we can. What really warms my heart is watching someone succeed in life. When you see their success, that’s what makes it all worthwhile,” said Gloria.
Gloria primarily leads volunteer recruitment and event coordination for The Salvation Army Bremerton Corps, in addition to duties as statistician, clothing bank manager, and occasional dog sitter for Captains Walters. She even has her own office space and works three days a week in her volunteer coordinator capacity.
During the holidays, she volunteers seven days a week and logs as much as 100 volunteer hours each week. Last Christmas, she recruited 110 bell ringers who logged over 2,000 volunteer hours.
Gloria also fosters a strong sense of community support with shelter guests, coordinating projects such as making cookies, jewelry, and bird feed hangers. For every client’s birthday, she makes 100 cupcakes for everyone to celebrate with them.
Volunteer of the Year
Gloria was recently recognized for her selfless community service as “Volunteer of the Year” by Kitsap Housing and Homelessness Coalition.
“I volunteer for the glorification of the Lord. He directed me here and is keeping me here. I’m motivated by helping others and making people happy. I just want them (Bremerton Corps clients) to have a sense of normalcy and know that people care,” said Gloria.
Hope Market excitement builds
With the new Bremerton Hope Market client-choice food pantry coming soon, Gloria is excited for The Salvation Army to help even more neighbors in need with fresh, nutritious food.
“I’m hoping we get a lot of produce, donations, and of course volunteers, coming in to support the people who are in need in Kitsap County,” said Gloria.
