A PLACE OF DIGNITY, CHOICE, AND LASTING CHANGE
ABOUT THE SALVATION ARMY IN BREMERTON
Established in 1920, The Salvation Army Bremerton is a well-known and respected community asset. Currently, we are serving Kitsap County by sheltering our unhoused neighbors with dignity and offering essential community services such as three hot daily meals, showers, laundry services, information on community resources, and programs to move our neighbors forward in the next steps of their journey. The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
"On the first day of our appointment to Bremerton, we looked at the tavern next to us and thought our dream would be to expand across the alley to help even more neighbors in need!" - Captain Dana Walters
ABOUT HOPE MARKET
The vision of doing more and serving the greatest need in Bremerton has become our Hope Market Project. We see addressing food insecurity as the most urgent need locally and beyond through our client-choice food pantry. In 2022, The Salvation Army bought Monica's Social Club, an adjacent property, for the purpose of extending our services to the community. We know that the way to healing and hope is often through our stomachs and The Salvation Army is thrilled to ensure that those who need it most will have hope given through our open doors.
FOOD INSECURITY IS IMPACTING OUR NEIGHBORS
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) published its forecast for 2024 food prices, predicting we would see a 1.6% increase for "food-at-home" prices - the food purchased from a grocery store or supermarket. The Urban Institute found that one in six adults made use of charitable food in 2023. At The Salvation Army, we had an 11 % increase in use of our food pantries in 2023.
OUR VISION
In the heart of Bremerton—where the need is great and access is limited—The Salvation Army has long stood as a pillar of support, offering thousands of meals and operating a vital food bank to help individuals and families in crisis. We’re taking that mission a step further with a bold new initiative: Hope Market. This dignity-centered community marketplace will empower those facing food insecurity to shop for healthy groceries free of charge, just like at any neighborhood store.
But Hope Market is more than a pantry. It’s a pathway to stability, a beacon of empowerment, and a new model of compassion in action.
We’ve taken the first step by acquiring the building site next door. Now we need your help to build

TRAILER TROUBLE
A woman called the Bremerton Corps asking if we could help her with food. She lives in a small trailer in a local RV park. Her lot rent is 75% of her SSI income. We brought her food products from the warehouse and delivered a fresh meal. She couldn't navigate the three stairs leading into her home, so I loaded up her refrigerator. She repeatedly said how grateful she was for The Salvation Army's help.
QUARANTINE CARE
We recently delivered food for 10 people experiencing COVID in Kitsap County - 15 meals to each isolated person. These folks came from our shelter, the local hospital and local clinics. These meals allow the patients to remain isolated during the contagious portion of their illness and reduce the overall risk to the community
To bring Hope Market to life, The Salvation Army Bremerton is launching a $2.2 million capital campaign. Every dollar will help us build a dignified community market and support hub.
Your gift is not just a donation—it’s a beacon of hope, bringing stability and the belief that everyone deserves the dignity of choice.
